Kamal offers technical expertise to Maniratnam

Though nothing concrete has come out officially from Mani Ratnam’s side, it appears that the maverick director would attempt to bring on celluloid version the epic Tamil novel ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ penned by the late Kalki. Reports, unconfirmed though, also suggest that while Vijay would play Vandiya Thevan in the film, it could be Surya who would be playing the title role of Ponniyin Selvan (King Raja Raja Chola, one of the greatest Tamil Kings).

Reports also say that Mani might consider re-aligning with ‘Maestro’ Ilayaraja for this film. Mani-Ilayaraja’s irresistible combo has resulted in the past in some ever-green mega-musical hits in ‘Idhaya Koil’, ‘Pagal Nilavu’ (Mani’s first film), ‘Agni Nakshatram’, ‘Nayagan’, ‘Thalapathi’ and ‘Mouna Raagam’. If the re-union between Mani and Ilaiyaraaja comes about, it can’t get any better!
Mani is also said to have held ‘extensive’ discussions with Kamal Haasan to get an idea as to how to shoot the war sequences in the period-type film he is planning. Kamal reportedly offered some valuable piece of info to Mani including hiring of hundreds of French horses to star in the film.
Kamal has reportedly assured Mani that he would let a couple of his handy assistants  Puviyarasu and Ira Murugan, who had lent immense inputs for his own ‘Maruthanayagam’, to work in the latter’s film.
