TIRUCHY: Vijay Makkal Iyakkam, the party launched by actor Vijay, has taken a vow to go all out in the hustings to ensure the defeat to the DMK in the April 13 elections to the State Assembly even as their leader himself is expected to campaign for the AIADMK, if the party is given five seats to contest from.
In a state where politics and cinema are interlinked, it is common for actors to join the campaign trail in view oftheir allegiance to different political parties, but the provocation for the Vijay Makkal Iyakkam(VMI)members waiting to go to the people is different.
They are targeting the DMK mainly because Vijay-starrer ‘Kavalan’ ran into some trouble during its release.
VMI cadre attribute the problems that Vijay faced in releasing the film to the DMK government.
This could mean real trouble for the DMK as most of the Vijay fans - they were the ones who primarily joined the VMI- had hitherto been DMK supporters also. VMI claims to have a following of 25 lakh members. It has 60,000 registered units and 40,000 non registered (as registration was stopped two years ago) each of the unit having 25 members.
While the buzz was that the VMI has been allotted three seats in the AIADMK-led front, the spirited fans are waiting for orders from Vijay and his father Director S A Chandrasekar. Vijay himself is expected to campaign for the AIADMK’s victory when the Iyakkam is given a minimum of five seats, VMI sources said.
‘The number of seats is not a matter, the fans will dedicatedly work for the winning of AIADMK led front in the elections’, Tiruchy district president of VMI R K Raja said. He claimed that Tiruchy had the maximum number of units of VMI in the State with 16,000 followed by Madurai with about 14,000 units.
Though most of Vijay fans favoured DMK for many years like Chandrasekhar, all had turned away their face from the DMK as per their ‘Thalaivar’s’ wish and intensified their work in favour of the AIADMK, he said.
The fans pointed out that Chandrasekhar’s film ‘Neethikku Thandanai’ which had an effect during the arrest of M Karunanidhi when MGR was the Chief Minister, the present movie ‘Sattapadi Kutram’ would rightly stir the conscience of the people in the present day political context as it satirises the DMK government and its ministers.
